I never thought I would see one in decent shape, but I saw one actually operating at the Yuba Gold Fields about two weeks ago. They created massive fields of rock piles, just destroying the landscape that they dredge (look up Yuba Gold Fields for an example of the destruction). Each bucket would yield an amount of gold about the size of quarter of a penny. It would dig down in the front, and spit the rocks out the back, filling up the lake in the back, while digging it out in the front. They used a chainsaw like bucket arm to dig down around 80 feet below in search of gold.

This dredge is about 7 miles west of where it was assembled. Dredges float on a lake and move around by moving the lake. This magnificent piece of machinery stopped production in the early 50's.
